Finding Sea-glass beach.....

I had a comment today on how to find sea-glass beach.  This is how we were shown to find it. I started from Blackbeards in Isabel. The X is where we were told Seaglass beach is.

This is a little closer picture of it. You can walk all the way down to the beach from Isabel. You walk through a narrow street between some houses, and the road leads all the way down to the beach. You can see the old shipwreck off to your right when you hit the beach:

  1. We will have to revisit that area next time.

If you look slightly north of that photo, between what I assume is the shipwreck and the ferry terminal, there is a continuation of that beach that you can access behind Al's Mar Azul. There is just a little sand path along the hill by the building down to the water. Captain Bill told us that was Sea Glass Beach and we did see someone else hunting there. I was able to find quite a number of larger pieces. I also had a lovely, albeit random conversation with the infamous shaman, Charlie, who was hanging out in the water.

We found an abundance of tiny pieces of sea glass on Playa Grande.

Thanks for the great updates. We enjoyed every one.

    1. If you see Charlie again, will you ask him to call his daughter in Indiana? Thanks.

  2. Hi Guys, I have enjoyed your posts of the trip, fun to see what we are in for in just a couple weeks! getting very excited! starting to work out the details and wanted to ask you how challenging it is driving from casa la vista into town in the dark. probably not getting to the house til 7pm on our first night. hoping to get out for dinner and drinks after a long day of traveling and do not want to wind up lost in the dark :) is the house close to a main drag? will a GPS work? looking forward to checking out the rock gallery and perhaps borrowing your beach hut! Welcome home, Chris

    1. Chris,

Either town is a snap to get to from Casa La Vista. We would just head east down to 997 and then shoot into Isabel. If we're going into Esperanza we take the second road, past the Hilltop apartment, south down to 997 and into Esperanza. You'll find taking this way back to the house from Esperanza much easier than driving all the way around on 997. The house is close to 997 though. If you tell me where your heading that night I can put a map up showing you the easiest way to reach it. It will take you a bit to find your way around Isabel. Isabel has some one ways and the side roads can be very narrow in places. Esperanza is really nothing more than the Malecon. Next Course and Veritas are both on 996. I'm working on a review of Casa La Vista, I'll be sure to include a map of the easiest ways to get to Isabel and Esperanza on that post.

    2. would like to check out Esperanza and the Malecon that first night. think we will just be looking for a casual atmosphere, nothing fancy, serving burgers and rum punch, on the main drag so we can take a stroll too. also would like to stop at a grocery store and pick up some basic provisions. think anything will be open at that hour? may ask Dennis if he would provide that service for us. did the house have beach towels? thanks!

    3. Ok...your gonna drive right by the Green Store on your way into Esperanza. It's open until 9pm. For burgers and a drink, either Duffys, Bananas or Tradewinds. Easy as pie.

Now here's how your gonna get to your house from the airport. Yeah I know Dennis will probably meet you at the airport and take you, but at least this way you can look at it online and kinda get a feel for the layout.

Ok...you pull out of the airport and turn left. You'll been on 200. You go east on 200. You'll drive past the turn off for 201 (that's where you can turn from Isabel if you want to go to Veritas or Next Course.) You'll keep driving on 200 and go pass both gas stations on the island. First one on your left, second one on your right. You'll pass a Morales store, on your left (bookmark than in your noggin for future reference). You keep driving on 200. You'll pass a Tire center. Right afer the tire center is a junky place that is a rental center. Immediately after the junky rental center is the turn for La Praa. If you past the turn for La Praa you will see a red building with a rooster painted on the side of it. This will be on your right. If you see this, you've went too far. Ok..once you turn up to La Praa you kinda wind around. You pass a turn off on your left. then you come to a Y. You keep to the left, all the way to the top of the ridge. You come to another Y. You still keep to the left. You go past the school and around a couple VERY sharp winding turns. You will see a very well maintained gray house on your left and directly across from it you will see some Postal Mailboxes. There's a road that heads downhill towards the right. This is the road Casa La Vista is on. It's a dead end road. It ends up at the construction site for the new Hix House. Casa la Vista is the only house on the right side of that road. So..that's how you get to the house.

From the house you drive back up to the top of the hill by the mailboxes and the nice Gray house. Back track all the way to the school (which was the second Y when you headed to the house). Instead of going back down into La Praa you head left (west). You will head up a ridge. First thing you come to is a narrow Y. You stay to the left. Go past the next T (on your left). All the way up and over the ridge (it is very steep..I mean very steep). Follow this road until it Tee's. Then turn left. You go all the way down hill until it Tee's. Turn left and go a very short distance and turn right. This road leads all way down to 997 (watch out for the drainage dip in this road. If you hit it going fast it'll rattle your teeth). When you hit the final T turn right. This will take you all the way into Esperanza. You will see the Green Store before you get to the Malecon strip. 997 actually Y's at the Green Store. You go left at the Green store to get to the Malecon. If it's on a Saturday expect A LOT of traffic parked along the road of the Malecon. There will be little to no parking along the Malecon. I would park at the kayak rental place on the left as soon as you hit the Malecon. It's rigth across from El Quenepo. You pull off to the right near the ocean to park. That way you can walk down the Malecon. First time driving on the Malecon, at night on a Saturday, can be VERY frustrating. So that's why I would park. I know this is probably very confusing for you so I've added a post along with this text to a blog entry tonight. Oh..there's plenty of beach towels and chairs at the house.

  3. Thanks so much! Looking at the map I am wondering if we indead had found it! When we are back in July, we will be sure to take a look. Also hoping we can make it to Orchard beach, as the road was closed when we were there last July :( If it is closed again, how far of a walk is it form the gate? Is it much farther than the walk to Garcia beach?

    Thank you!

    1. May I offer input? We walked the road from Media Luna to Navio in the heat in July with no trouble. The map makes it look to be about 1000 ft. I have never been to Orchid because the gate was persistently closed, but a look at the map would suggest it is about twice as far as our walk. I believe did hear the proprietor of El Quenepo suggesting that it was a manageable trek and worth the trouble.

    2. I would say it is not as far as to Garcia. They had graded the road when we were there. I walked all the way from Orchid, along the water, to Escondida and then back to Orchid via the road. It didn't take me long at all. They also reworked a low spot in the road that usually held water, that might make the difference in the gate closing.

  4. I see a lot of things noted about closed areas. We will be in vieques the last week of March with a SUV and a Kayak. I was hoping to get into the eastern end of the island and find a secluded beach that we can snorkel, fish, and just plain hang out. are there roads I should know about that we cant use? Are there areas by kayak that are closed?

    1. There are plenty of places in the refuge that you can find. We just spent two weeks on Vieques and I don't think I ever saw anyone at Playa Escondida. Good snorkeling off of it and you could also launch a kayak from there and go out to Blue Tang reef and snorkel. Another option is to launch from Playa La Plata, like we did and kayak out to Lemon reef and then to Playa Fanduca, if your a good enough kayaker. The way it was explained to me was that you cannot go onto into of the fish and wildlife restricted land. But you can stay at the tide line. You will not be able to drive beyond La Plata in the refuge, all the other roads are closed. The eastern tip of the island is not going to be accessable by kayak, imho. I posted a video with some maps of a kayak trip we took. We went out into Ensenada Honda. It's called "Lemon reef via Kayak." It's on the Feb 13th entry of this blog. Ensenada Honda is big with plenty to explore.
